I am introducing to you a rare wedding photograph taken during the 1965 Dominican Civil Wa

War always leaves in its wake stories of innocent lives lost and sheer devastation. But even amidst those piles of ashes, history reminds us of rare moments where love and hope still manage to bloom.

One such example is this wedding photograph captured during the 1965 civil war in the Dominican Republic, which is still discussed worldwide today. A bride and groom traveling with smiles in a military jeep, holding weapons in their hands, through a city surrounded by gunshots and military guards! At first glance, it might resemble a scene from a movie, but behind it lies a true life story.

💎Who were the heroes of this wedding?

The bride elegantly dressed in a beautiful white wedding gown is Brunilda Amaral. Sitting right next to her with his hands on the steering wheel, sporting a military helmet, is Gabriel Santana. He wasn't just a groom; Gabriel Santana was also one of the frontline rebels fighting in the raging civil war.

In May 1965, their journey took them right through the war zone of Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic.

🎯 The Cause of the War:

To truly understand the significance of this photograph, we must first look at the political climate of that time.

In 1963, Juan Bosch became the democratically elected President of the Dominican Republic. But his tenure was short-lived; just seven months later, a military coup violently stripped him of power. Refusing to back down, a massive uprising erupted in 1965 as pro-Bosch citizens and a loyal faction of the military joined forces. This revolutionary group came to be known as the 'Constitutionalists'. José Gabriel was one of the rebels in this revolutionary group. This marriage took place during a terrifying time when the country was plunging into a severe civil war, and eventually, even the American military intervened.

💌 What is the message this wedding gives us?

In a typical wedding photograph, what we usually see are bouquets of flowers and smiling faces. But here, the bride and groom hold weapons in their hands!

In a time of war, where there is absolutely no guarantee about the future and death could strike at any moment, it was the sheer courage they showed to hold onto their love and life that made this picture famous. This single photograph gave the world a powerful message: that bombs and guns cannot defeat humanity's will to live and love. Unfortunately, today the world is passing through an even more terrifying atmosphere. Gaza and Lebanon are living examples of this. Imperialism is a cancer eating away at the human conscience. Against it, each and every one of us needs to raise our voice...

Let us reject imperialism and stand together for a global order rooted in kindness, brotherhood, and love.
